After years of working as a real-world tech reviewer, assessing and critiquing laptops daily, I constantly encounter Chrome consuming 60% to 80% of system memory. Fortunately, there's good news: Google has recently integrated truly impressive built-in memory management into Chrome. By just a few tweaks to your settings, you can practically halve its RAM consumption.

Before we dive into the fixes, let's understand why Google Chrome is so greedy with memory.
Google's multi-process architecture Other web browsers used a single process for the entire browser, but Chrome gave each tab, extension, and plugin its own isolated process. While this greatly improves the stability and security of the browser (if one site crashes, only that tab dies; your whole browser won't crash), it means that each open tab consumes its own chunk of your laptop’s RAM.
Step 1:
Turn On Chrome's Built-in Memory Saver Google quietly slipped a fantastic performance feature into Chrome that a lot of people don't realize even exists: Memory Saver.This is your first line of defense. On your laptop, open the Google Chrome browser. Click the three vertical dots icon in the top-right corner and choose Settings.
In the menu on the left-hand side, select Performance.
Look for the toggle switch for Memory Saver and flip it to the On position. Select either the 'Standard' or 'Maximum' mode (setting this to 'Maximum' aggressively frees up memory from inactive background tabs on your laptop). Chrome now puts tabs you haven't interacted with recently into an idle state. The moment you switch back to one of these tabs, it'll reload instantaneously and take you right back to where you left off.
Step 2:
Use Chrome's Task Manager to Butcher Insane Resource Hogs Sometimes, a single, poorly coded website or a background web application can gobble up 2 GB of RAM by itself.
Your standard Windows Task Manager won't tell you which specific tab is sucking all the juice, but Chrome's own Task Manager will. Press Shift + Esc while you're in Chrome (or go to the three dots icon > More Tools > Task Manager). A window will appear showing you all the currently open tabs, extensions, and processes.
Click the "Memory footprint" column header to sort all entries by RAM usage, from highest to lowest. Find the tab or process that is consuming a disproportionate amount of memory (anything over 1,500 MB is usually a red flag) and click the "End Process" button.
Step 3:
Comb Through and Prune Overgrown browser Extensions Extensions are constantly running in the background and guzzling RAM.
Think of that ad blocker, grammar checker, price-comparison add-on, or VPN - they all eat system memory, even when you're not directly using them.
Type chrome://extensions/ into Chrome's address bar and press Enter. Scroll through the list and turn off any extensions you don't use every day (simply toggle the switch off next to them). You can also click 'Remove' to get rid of anything you haven't used in a while or don't trust. Pro-tip: Aim to keep the number of enabled browser extensions for your laptop to 5 or fewer for the best performance.
Step 4:
Flick The "Hardware Acceleration" Switch This setting offloads more graphics-heavy tasks like playing video or rendering 3D websites from your CPU onto your laptop’s graphics processor (GPU), freeing up system RAM.
In the Chrome settings, select 'System' from the left-hand menu. Look for the switch for 'Use hardware acceleration when available.' If your laptop has a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, make sure this switch is ON.If you have an older laptop with relatively weak integrated graphics, try turning this switch OFF, restart Chrome, and then see if your RAM usage figures drop.
Step 5:
Clear Cache & Put the Breaks on Auto-Preloading Chrome has a tendency to try and predict what you might click on next and preemptively loads those pages in the background. This speeds up your browsing when you DO click on links, but it consumes considerable resources when you're on a machine with less RAM.
In Chrome settings, navigate to Privacy and security and then click either 'Preloading pages' or just Performance.
In the settings for 'Preloading', choose either 'Standard' or 'No preloading' (instead of 'Extended'). After adjusting the preload setting, also go back to the 'Privacy and security' menu, click on 'Clear browsing data,' select 'All time' from the time range dropdown, tick 'Cached images and files', and click 'Clear data'.
